When the YLHS Mustang Coaches and Wrestlers entered the Rabobank Arena on Friday, March 6th, they knew the Mustangs were going to be represented at the 2014 CIF State Wrestling Championship because the two new Mustang Mats were being used for the event. However, the real reason the Mustangs were going to be represented was because Mustang Junior, Abe Ochoa was competing in the prestigious State Championship after placing 2nd in the CIF Southern Section Master’s tournament the previous weekend. After a first round win, Abe stepped up in the second round. Below is a short excerpt from an article written by Nick Giannandrea of The Fresno Bee.
“Yorba Linda’s Abe Ochoa can brag about taking down one of the most dominant high school wrestlers ever to compete in California.
Not that it derailed Nick Nevills’ quest to become the 18th three-time champion in the 42-year history of the CIF State Championships.
“He took me down, it happens,” the Clovis High senior said with a shrug, even though it rarely does, at least to him.” (CLICK HERE FOR ENTIRE ARTICLE)
Abe finished the Tournament with a 2-2 record and certainly gave the California high school wrestling community something to think about for next year.
