Ochoa Wins Asics So Cal Challenge Championship Belt


Last weekend was a busy one for Mustang wrestling at all levels. The Varsity team competed in the Asics So Cal Challenge at Tustin High School on Friday and Saturday and the Frosh-Soph team hosted the season’s second Mustang Invitational.

Although even more banged up this week than last, the varsity team wrestled hard and found good success finishing 8th in the 62 team tournament. Abe Ochoa continued his undefeated run by winning the championship belt beating Robert Night of Newbury Park High School 4-2 in the final match. Joining Ochoa were 3rd place winners, Jacob Roehl and Ryan Jalabi, 4th place Anthony Garcia, 5th place Max Matles, and 6th place Brendan Steinman.

The Frosh-Soph team hosted 12 Schools comprising 16 teams at the Mustang Invitational winning the championship as a team and posting some impressive individual results. Four Mustangs ended the tournament as champions, Tyler Taguyan (106), Matthew Lugo (138), Chris Lugo (145) and Koorous Vargha (182). George Millan (195) finished 2nd, Eric Saldana (113), Chris Mehdizadeh (120), Sebastian Dement (138) and Richard Yoo (195) finished 3rd.
