This past Friday and Saturday found Abe Ochoa competing in the 43rd annual CIF State Boys Wrestling Championships March 6-7, at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
Ochoa started off Day One with an aggressive win by pinning Alan Moreno of Sunnyside High School in the second period. He then moved one step further in a very tough bracket by beating Mike McCauley of Vacaville High School 3-1.
In the Quarter Finals, Ochoa found himself matched up against Jose Alvarez of Selma High School. Alvarez had spent several weeks as the top ranked heavy weight in all of California. In an extremely hard fought match, Ochoa came up short losing 1-0. Alvarez went on to become one of the tournament’s State finalists.
Dropping into the consolation portion of the bracket required Ochoa to come back on Day Two of the tournament to win more matches. He did just that beating Dominic Balmer of Woodcreek High School, 7-4 and then defeating Gavin Nye of Corning High School in a match he had to win to become a California State Placer, which he did with an impressive 11-4 win.
Ochoa ended the tournament as one of eight State Placers finishing in the sixth spot. Being a California State placer earns him the opportunity to compete in the 26th Annual NHSCA High School Nationals in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on March 27-29, 2015.
