Abe Ochoa rings in the New Year with Tournament of Champions Heavy Weight Title.

The Mustang varsity finished the Holiday break by competing in the Tournament of Champions on January 2nd and 3rd at Cerritos College. Abe Ochoa kept his undefeated streak alive (now 21-0) by beating

David Zavala of Lakewood High School in the finals (CLICK HERE FOR OC Varsity Article). Although a bit banged up as a team, the Mustangs battled in the 63 team tournament, finishing in the 14th place spot as a team.

Individually, in addition to Ochoa’s championship, the Mustangs had two additional wrestlers finish as medalists. Ryan Jalabi placed 5th and Max Matles finished 8th in their respective 64 man brackets and weight classes.

It will be a busy week for Mustang wresting as the action continues for all levels this Tuesday night in our second Dual against Canyon High School at home in the YLHS gym. This weekend the Frosh-Soph team will be hosting our second Mustang Invitational, and the varsity will be competing in the Asics So Cal Challenge at Tustin High School on Friday and Saturday.
