Abe Ochoa is the Heavy Weight Champion of the 2014 Las Vegas Holiday Classic

What happens in Vegas just can’t stay in Vegas. The Mustangs headed up I-15 traveling to the Las Vegas Holiday Classic to compete last Friday and Saturday and compete they did. Abe Ochoa (16-0) ended the two day tournament as the Heavy Weight Champion, beating Esequiel Valles (18-1) of Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Arizona with an impressive pin in the first round of the championship match.

The Varsity Mustangs were solid, finishing ninth (9th) as a team in the seventy four (74) team tournament that included teams from Washington D.C., New York, Louisiana, Oklahoma and several other states. In addition to Ochoa, the Mustangs had three other wrestlers finish as medalists. Andrew Gomez (18-2) and Anthony Garcia (19-4) finished 4th, and Jacob Roehl (14-5) finished 8th in their respective weight classes.

Coach Forty, Coach Ransom and Coach Sprenger really kept the wrestlers focused and ready to compete in a fast paced twelve mat setting. The coaches moved quickly from mat to mat for approximately ten hours each day working every bit as hard as the twenty one wrestlers they managed.

Thanks to all the parents and grandparents that were able to make the trip. It means a lot to the wrestlers and the coaches to see the great support they get from the Mustang wrestling family.
